With a dash of low FODMAP gin and a pop of fruity seltzer, this easy gin and berry cocktail will be the star of your holiday bar cart!
No matter what I tried, I’ve never been able to get into gin. Through some miscommunication of my taste buds, it’s always tasted like drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth. So I was pretty sad to learn that it was one of the three low FODMAP spirits (rude!).
I was complaining about this at length to one of my friends (who happens to be a master bartender), and he said that the real problem was that I probably wasn’t mixing it correctly (oops, my bad!).
Since gin is made from juniper berries, he suggested pairing it with berry or floral flavours. So we whipped out some fruit-infused seltzer, threw in a shot of gin and my new favourite cocktail was born!
So if you’re looking for a fun way to celebrate the holidays, grab your favourite sparkling water and let’s get toasting!
Keep it FODMAP friendly
Celebrate in style with this classy gin and berry cocktail! Check out the notes below for tips on keeping this recipe FODMAP friendly!
According to Monash University, gin is low FODMAP in servings of 30 ml (one standard shot) per serving, though they don’t list a maximum serving size.
Monash has explained on their official FODMAP blog, that foods with no listed limit can be consumed in large servings without going over your FODMAP load.
That being said, alcohol is a general gut irritant, so you may not tolerate it well. Make sure to check out my full article on alcohol and the low FODMAP diet for the full scoop.
You can’t have a cocktail without a mixer, so let’s talk pop!
There are lots of flavoured sparkling waters available these days. You can pick whichever berry flavour sounds fun (like raspberry, pomegranate, or blackberry), as long as the label lists “0” carbohydrates.
Since FODMAPs are carbohydrates, 0 carbs mean 0 FODMAPs! So you can indulge in some of your favourite berry flavours, even if they’re normally high FODMAP!
Heads up, fizzy drinks like seltzer can cause tummy aches in some people, so try a test drink at home to see if seltzer works for you.
Last but not least, cane sugar syrup! I have a serious sweet tooth, so I like to add a splash of cane sugar syrup to keep things sweet.
Cane sugar syrup is an invert sugar, which means the sugar molecules are suspended in water. Since table sugar has equal amounts of glucose and fructose, cane sugar syrup is low FODMAP (yay!). If you’re not into the sweet stuff, you can skip this ingredient.
FODMAP math
You are what you eat! Check out the notes below to see how many servings of each FODMAP group are in one of these gin and berry cocktails (spoiler alert, there aren’t any)!
Lactose = 0
Fructan = 0
GOS = 0
Polyol = 0
